Prevention and Treatment for Marionette Lines By Hove Center for Facial Plastic Surgery on August 06, 2018

Portrait of smiling woman with beautiful skinAs we age, the skin loses its volume and elasticity. This is due to gravity and other environmental factors, such as sun exposure and lifestyle habits. As collagen production decreases, marionette lines can appear. These are the lines that run from the corners of the mouth down to one or both sides of the chin.

We offer treatment for marionette lines at our Paoli, PA practice including laser treatments, surgical options, and dermal fillers for effective, skin-smoothing results.

Treatment for Marionette Lines

Patients who are self-conscious about the appearance of marionette lines have a few different options from which to choose. The treatment recommended for you will depend on your unique circumstances as well as your personal cosmetic goals.

Dermal Fillers

The most common treatment option for marionette lines is dermal filler injections. These injectable treatments can smooth fine lines and wrinkles, adding volume and hydration to the skin. Many of these fillers, such as Radiesse®, also include an ingredient that stimulates natural collagen production.

Laser Treatments

Facial laser treatments utilize heat and light energy to lift and tighten the underlying tissues. As a result, the skin is strengthened and new collagen growth is encouraged. The result is smoother, more vibrant, younger-looking skin.

Micro-Needling

Also referred to as collagen induction therapy, micro-needling involves applying controlled trauma to the surface of the skin. By introducing damage to the tissues, the body’s natural healing process promotes the production of new collagen and elastin fibers. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can be used in conjunction with this treatment to offer dramatic results.

Facelift

If you have deep creases or prominent marionette lines, you may wish to consider a facelift. This procedure removes excess skin and reshapes the underlying muscles for a tighter, smoother appearance. This type of surgical intervention offers the most dramatic, long-term results.

How to Prevent Marionette Lines

Some patients may be more genetically predisposed to the formation of marionette lines. While there is no way to avoid or prevent them altogether, there are ways that you can reduce your risk of developing them.

Sleep on Your Back

It might sound strange, but individuals who sleep on their sides or stomachs are more likely to develop facial lines and wrinkles. Let gravity work to your advantage, and sleep on your back whenever possible.

Invest in Sun Protection

There are plenty of reasons to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Excessive sun exposure can cause collagen loss and skin laxity. We recommend applying a high SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen and wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat anytime you are outdoors.

Stop Smoking

Tobacco products contain ingredients that cause premature aging. Smoking cigarettes can lead to the deterioration of collagen in addition to decreasing future collagen production.

Stay Hydrated

Did you know that dry skin is more likely to become wrinkled or damaged? Drinking plenty of water can help ensure that your skin stays supple and radiant.

Practice Good Skin Care

A daily skin care regimen can significantly improve the overall health of your skin, as well as prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Talk to your dermatologist or cosmetic specialist to determine which type of regimen will work best with your unique skin type.
