How Popular is Eyelid Rejuvenation?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is one of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States.  In 2011, more than 190,000 patients underwent this procedure.

Why Would I need a Blepharoplasty?

The eyes are arguably the most revealing facial feature- they alone can convey a wide range of emotions and expressions.  Many patients complain that they appear older or more tired than they feel.  Oftentimes, the eyelids are the culprits.  The most common cause is lax or redundant upper eyelid skin (giving a “droopy” appearance) and bulging lower eyelid fat (giving a “sleep-deprived” appearance).  These attributes can convey a sense of anger or fatigue that is unintended.  Eyelid rejuvenation (also called a blepharoplasty) can correct these imperfections and has been one of the most dramatic ways to change the overall facial appearance.

How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?

A blepharoplasty may be performed alone, or in combination with other facial plastic surgery procedures.  Usually only local anesthesia is necessary and the procedure can be performed in your surgeon’s office.  The entire procedure takes about 1-2 hours to complete.  Most commonly, a thin strip of skin and muscle are removed from the upper eyelid through a natural skin crease, and lower eyelid fat is conservatively removed or repositioned through an incision on the inside of the eyelid or at its edge.  Proper placement of these incisions will insure nearly imperceptible scarring.  The procedure may cause some bruising and/or swelling which may last from 1-2 weeks after the surgery.  Patients usually resume their normal activities within 3-5 days and may apply make-up within 5-7 days after surgery.

Is Blepharoplasty Covered by Insurance?

If drooping eyelids become so pronounced that they interfere with a person’s vision, a blepharoplasty may be covered by insurance.  However, a blepharoplasty for purely cosmetic reasons is not covered.  Please check with your insurance company if you have a question regarding coverage.

If you often look older or more tired than you feel, I encourage you to ask whether a blepharoplasty may be appropriate for you.  This simple cosmetic procedure may take years off your appearance and help you look more refreshed and relaxed.  After all, what matters most is how you see yourself.
